Pair of Empire period ormolu and patinated astral lamps.

A handsome, large pair of Empire-period "sinombres" or "astral" oil lamps, adapted as modern lighting lamps.
Each lamp features a central amphora-shaped shaft in Empire green patinated bronze resting on a stepped square base.
Two swans with outstretched wings animate the upper part in perfect symmetry.
The lower part, on the other hand, features a circular, ormolu collar adorned with fine fluting. An elegant ormolu pedestal links to the square base, which acts as a pedestal.

Associated with Apollo and Venus in ancient tradition, the swan embodies beauty, purity and faithful love. Under Napoleon Bonaparte's Consulate and Empire, it became a popular decorative motif, particularly in refined interiors, where it also evoked gentleness and femininity. It is frequently found in private apartments, boudoirs, bathrooms and on objects associated with intimacy.

A little history:
A real revolution in the early 19th century, the discovery of the astral lamp, invented by Isaac Bordier-Marcet ( 1768-1835, Swiss engineer, industrialist and inventor ), marked a fundamental advance in the history of lighting and revolutionized the oil lamp. With its flat, ring-shaped reservoir surrounding the burner, its flame illuminated objects from top to bottom, without casting a shadow. There were also luxury versions, with bases made of various noble materials (marble, bronze, silver, etc.) As the globes were fragile, they were often replaced by shades.
