- Important painted canvas that served as a painted ceiling, 19th-century work, France.
- This painted canvas, remarkable for its size and original use (ceiling), presents a rich decoration. Organized into compartments, like mock coffered boxes, each of them contains a rich decoration elegantly displaying a varied plant ornamental vocabulary.
Starting with the central panel, an octagon with a green background whose contours are highlighted by a frieze of delicate stylized palmettes painted in orange and yellow with a golden effect. In its center, it has several concentric circles with varied motifs painted in golden yellow; (from the inside out) a rosette, a torus of laurel, a garland of foliage inhabited by birds, and human figures of terms supporting filled baskets, with a caduceus at the four cardinal points, and a torus of small flowers. The green octagonal compartment is surrounded by a scroll and an orange-yellow frieze imitating a wood paneling frame.
At the four corners, red-ground spandrels provide a pleasing contrast with the green color of the center. Within these spandrels, golden yellow ornamentation unfolds, respecting the law of the frame; a central medallion depicting a head facing forward, crowned with a triumphal laurel wreath, is surrounded by scrolls of flowering plants. The side compartments are painted in grisaille, as if to imitate sculpted reliefs, with a decoration of plant-related motifs.
- The ornamental vocabulary and the choice of color palette, combining green and red, hark back to the 19th century. They are characteristic of the neoclassical decorations of the Empire period, whose style was largely influenced by the discoveries of ancient painted decorations from Herculaneum and Pompeii.
