This small oil on paper, with its bucolic subject, is signed Prévot-Valéri. The subject is a recurrent one for this painter: a threatening stormy sky at dusk, a shepherdess accompanying her flock, lantern in hand, across a wild moor. This painting can be compared with "Fuyant l'orage", exhibited at the 1908 Salon.
Auguste Prévot-Valéri, whose real name was Valéri Prévost, was born of unknown parentage on January 21, 1857 in Villeneuve-sur-Yonne, the son of Élisabeth Prévost, a domestic servant. He was the father of painter André Prévot-Valéri 1890-1959. A pupil of Antoine Guillemet and Jules Lefebvre, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1884 to 1929, and took part in the 1900 Universal Exhibition, where he was awarded a bronze medal. In 1887, he won a medal of honor at the Salon, a third-class medal in 1895, a second-class medal in 1898 and the Prix Rosa Bonheur in 1908.
His works are on display in various museums, including the Musée Municipal de Coulommiers, the Musée des Beaux Arts de Dijon, the Musée des Beaux Arts de Nancy, the Petit Palais in Paris, the Musée de l'Hotel Sandelin in Saint-Omer and the Musée d'Art de Toulon.
