Full-length portrait of a Lady-in-Waiting, by Juan Pantoja de la Cruz (1553-1608)
    Oil on canvas
    Dimensions: 106 x 80 cm (unframed)

Juan Pantoja de la Cruz, originally from Valladolid, was a Spanish court painter who studied under his master, Alonso Sanchez Coello, painter to Kings Philip II and Philip III.

He took over Coello's workshop and remained a renowned portraitist attached to the royal family in Valladolid, Burgos, Lerma, and El Escorial. He also excelled in religious and animal paintings.

We present a large full-length portrait of a young Lady-in-Waiting wearing an embroidered gown in shades of orange and adorned with jewels fit for a queen. Her beautiful face with its lively gaze is framed by a finely painted lace collar, which also indicates her social standing. Her exquisitely delicate hands hold a laurel wreath, a symbol of power, knowledge, and also peace.
