Son of portrait painter Edmond Marie Louis Wagrez (Douai, 1815 - 4th arrondissement of Paris, 1891), with whom he began studying, Jacques Clément attended the Beaux-arts under the master Isidore Pils, then Henri Lehmann, a disciple of Ingres. He then enrolled in the studio of Jules Eugène Lenepveu, before leaving for Italy on a study trip. The Venetian and Florentine Renaissance inspired his subjects and decors. In 1870, he sent his first watercolors and portraits to the Salon, where they earned him great renown. A fashionable painter, he was commissioned to decorate the interiors of Parisian palaces and private mansions, as well as a number of delicately illustrated books.
