A pupil of Alexandre Cabanel, Pierre Outin was one of those academic painters who portrayed women in portraits and small genre scenes with a finesse and refinement characteristic of the way women were portrayed in the last third of the 19th century. Our painting is a good example of this, with a young woman's rather free hairstyle, confident attitude, face lit up by a pretty smile and careless but controlled carriage of her fan, while her other arm rests confidently on the armchair. All elements that give us the true portrait of a young lady about to enter society!
