Early 19th century French school, portrait of an aristocrat or notable in hunting costume with his rifle, seemingly pointing to his hunting tableau. Restoration-period oil on canvas, circa 1840.
A fine portrait typical of the Romantic period, whose painter we have been unable to identify at this stage, but it is the work of a good master. The face is very expressive, there are no errors of proportion, the grain of the skin and the play of shadows are well rendered, especially the two hands, which are always the most difficult parts. The model is handsome, obviously a member of the aristocracy or the upper middle classes.
A fine piece to complete a portrait collection or an early 19th century setting. It is presented in a rich wood and stucco frame gilded with gold leaf.
Excellent condition, painting on its original canvas, cleaned and unpainted. The frame with its original gilding is well preserved and cleaned.
