A beautiful oil on canvas portrait depicting a little girl in ceremonial dress for the Feast of the Annunciation (which commemorates the announcement made to Mary by the angel Gabriel of her future motherhood). The medallion she wears represents the angel Gabriel and symbolizes the Annunciation. She is dressed in white (purity and virginity) and wears the color blue, which is one of the symbols of the Virgin Mary.
This work, very well preserved for its age, is signed JB Caquin and dated 1871. (Belgian artist?) The artist's technique is perfectly mastered; his work is masterful and very luminous. One noteworthy feature (which leads me to believe that this is a family portrait and not a commission) is that a wooden block allowed the artist to enlarge the painting at the bottom (I didn't touch it; it's part of the work).
On the back, there is a label with the model's name (Valentine Hopener).
