Marie Vassilieff (1884-1957) was a Russian-born, naturalized French painter and sculptor. She is known for her central role in Parisian avant-garde artistic life, particularly in Montparnasse, where she founded her own painting school, the "Académie Vassilieff", later transformed into a popular artists' canteen. The latter was soon frequented by numerous artistic figures, including Picasso, Modigliani and Fernand Léger. Influenced by Cubism, she created portraits and sculpted cloth dolls of her artist friends.
