Bolognese School, circa 1630, follower of Annibale Carracci: Pietà, oil on copper, 21.5 x 16.5 cm, unframed. The painting has been cleaned and revarnished.
This is a copy of Annibale Carracci's Pietà, an emblematic painting of the Italian Baroque, commissioned from the artist by Cardinal Eduardo Farnese at the very end of the 16th century, and now in the Capodimonte Museum. This painting made a strong impression on his contemporaries and was therefore widely disseminated throughout Europe through engravings (here, for example, that of Gilles Rousselet, 1610-1686). Copies of it can be found in French public collections, notably by Nicolas Mignard (1606-1668), now in the Palais des Papes in Avignon. We will also mention those held in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Valenciennes and Bordeaux.
Viewable by appointment in Montpellier, Marseille, and Avignon. Delivery available at cost within a 200km radius of Montpellier.
