*The donation of the rosary, also known as the handing over of the rosary, the gift of the rosary and the institution of the rosary, is a theme in Christian iconography representing the Virgin Mary handing over a rosary to Saint Dominic de Guzmán.
The scene is surrounded by the 15 mysteries of the Rosary in medallions, which are read from right to left.
It illustrates a tradition spread by the Dominicans from the late 15th century onwards, according to which Saint Dominic had a vision of Mary transmitting the Rosary prayer to him and asking him to spread it. It was a frequent theme in Western European religious art from the 16th century onwards, appearing in many churches in the form of stained glass windows, altarpieces and paintings.
