Gothic-style triptych in hand-carved wood, circa 1880, by Albin Normand d'Amiens (Albinus Normanus), depicting in the center the Virgin Mary under a canopy held by angels and on a dais surrounded by numerous figures; bishops and lords on the doors, miniautures in oil.
This work was exhibited under number 101 (a piece of the 101 label remains in the lower right) in 1886 in Amiens at the archeological exhibition in the galleries of the Musée de Picardie for the fiftieth anniversary of the Société des antiquaires de Picardie from June 1 to July 4 (see last photos).
Albin Normand exhibited regularly in Amiens from 1853, notably at the exhibition of the Société des amis des arts du département de la somme and in 1860 in the rooms of the Amiens town hall at the artistic and archaeological exhibition organized by the Société des antiquaires de Picardie, where we learn that he lived at 24 rue de Castille in Amiens and that he excelled above all in the reproduction in gouache of bas-reliefs and miniatures from the Middle Ages.
This triptych bears an exhibition label on the back, stating that it belongs to the Hidé collection in Bruyères-sous-Laon.
This collector was Charles Hidé (1825-1894), a man of letters and politician, secretary of the Laon academic society and member of the Laon museum commission. He had a collection of works of art, including paintings, earthenware, coins and furniture, and was even behind the discovery of a Merovingian cemetery between Vorges and Bruyères, at a place called "La croix Mathias".
He published a notice on the fête des innocents et des fous in Laon, a marche populaire Laonnoise with military music by Frederic Porsh in 1888 and L'africaine, an opera by Meyerber in 1886.
A great collector, his house was filled from top to bottom with objects from the chateaux of La Bove and Parfandru.
Mr Charles Hide was one of the greatest collectors in the Laon region, after Mr Amédée Piette, Mr Abbé Poquet, Mr Gomart, Mr Perin and Mr Souliac-Boileau.
He took part in the loan and exhibition of works of art in his region, for which he was awarded a silver medal by the Société des Antiquaires in Amiens in 1860, for several antique paintings, ivories, religious silverware, enamels, furniture, weapons and ironwork.
He was awarded a silver medal by the Comité Archéologique de Noyon for his interesting work on the history of the Bruyères Laon commune.
The object presented here must have been purchased from Albin Normand around 1880, and Charles Hidé must have been in awe of the artist's attention to detail and the quality of his pictorial and sculptural workmanship.
Albinus Normand painted a self-portrait of himself in this composition, hidden among the figures.
the top of the spire is missing.
