French School, early 18th century, The Virgin and Child Served by an Angel, after the original work by Simon Vouet. The Virgin Mary holds the Son of God on her lap; they are served by a winged angel who has brought them a basket of fruit. Oil on canvas, presented in a giltwood frame with palmettes from the Empire period.
This elegant 18th-century religious composition reproduces, in reverse image, the model held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Caen (inv. 80.9.2), attributed to Simon Vouet, First Painter to Louis XIII and a major figure in the introduction of the Baroque style in France. The presence of a mirrored image is characteristic of workshop copies or works intended for the devotional market of the 18th century, made from engravings or reversed cartoons, which were widely circulated at the time.
A spectacular composition in a beautiful frame, ideal as a living room painting, in a stairwell, or above an altar in a chapel.
Excellent condition; the painting, previously relined, has been cleaned by our conservator. The gold leaf frame has been cleaned by our gilder. No damage. Superb.
