Oil on fir wood depicting Saint Barbara, 17th-18th century, Italian or Spanish school.

This elegant representation of Saint Barbara, virgin and martyr, is in keeping with the tradition of Renaissance devotional painting. The saint is shown standing, full-length, wearing a long, pearl-gray dress cinched at the waist, covered by a flowing, ochre-gold cloak with soft, harmonious folds.

The saint is immediately identifiable by her two traditional attributes. To her left is a cylindrical tower, a reminder of the place where her father, Dioscorus, had her imprisoned to shield her from Christian influence. This tower, a symbol of her imprisonment but also of her unwavering faith, is her most characteristic iconographic attribute. In her right hand, she holds a palm frond, the universal emblem of martyrdom and spiritual victory over death.

This panel likely comes from an altarpiece.
