19th century French school, large painting of predominantly pink flowers, presented in a basket by Clément Gontier. Oil on canvas in a large wood and stucco channel frame, entirely gilded with gold leaf. Signed lower right.
Clément Gontier (1876-1918), a history painter and pupil of Jean-Paul Laurens, is also well known for his still lifes and flower paintings. Like our painting, Clément Gontier's still lifes are always vividly colored, well treated and spectacular.
