Pupil of Ludovic Piette and Armand Doré, Louise Darru is a painter who specialized in flowers. She exhibited regularly at the Salon de Rouen, a salon where many women painters of flowers exhibited, especially after 1870 (Cécile Doneaud, Cécile Bougourd, Eleonore Bourler, Anna Baudry, Delphine de Cool and Louise Darru). And at the Paris Salon. She was married to the painter Jules Héreau, known for his painting of the coasts and the Normandy countryside in the region of Honfleur.
A reviewer spoke of "his great freedom of brushwork and that spirit of touch that we have always recognized in the artist. She was particularly noticed at the 1873 Salon in Paris where she exhibited "Fleurs de champs" and "Fleurs de greenhouse". One reviewer writes, "It's carried off with unparalleled ardor, science, certainty, and grace. It blazes and live in the light forever." Another boasts of its "solid pieces of paint".
Our painting depicts a pretty bouquet of flowers in a beautiful glass-shaped vase. The bright colors, the delicate and light touch as well as the rendering of the transparency of the glass, make this composition a very beautiful example of his art. There is an exhibition label on the back.
