    After studying painting (he won the first Prix de Rome in 1911), he was admitted as a resident at the Villa Medici from 1911 to 1913. He then turned to the cinema, first as a decorator then became a film director at from 1922.
    In 1930, his first talking film, Une belle garce, was a commercial success, a success which was not repeated thereafter. He left the cinema at the end of the 1930s, returned to painting, then he directed short films from 1945.
    He resumed his activity as a painter after leaving film sets for good in the mid-1960s.
