Influenced as much by classical still lifes as by the modernist movements that ran through the 20th century, this painting by Marcel Depré is a change from his usual subjects. This artist, who became the official painter of the Navy in 1973, has won several prizes for his works that focus on coastal life. This former student of the École d'Estienne in Paris from 1933 to 1937 was noticed in artistic circles for his characteristic paste that draws from both Cubism and the optical works of Robert and Sonia Delaunay. Several works by Marcel Depré are now in the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris, the Musée National de la Marine and the Musée des Baux-de-Provence. Our painting in perfect condition is offered unframed.
