A beautiful Royal Copenhagen porcelain animal figurine depicting an adorable young Saint Bernard sitting, model no. 439, after a design by the Danish sculptor Niels Nielsen.
This charming sculpture perfectly illustrates the remarkable Danish tradition of animal representation, in which Royal Copenhagen has particularly distinguished itself.
The young dog is depicted sitting in an extremely natural and expressive pose. Its slightly tilted head, drooping ears, attentive gaze, and gentle expression give this small sculpture a particularly endearing presence. The modeling is very well executed, with particularly careful rendering of the volumes of the body, paws, muzzle, ears, and tail. The very balanced posture lends the whole piece a great deal of naturalness.
The polychromy elegantly combines the white of the porcelain with delicate creamy beige tones, notably on the head, ears, back, and certain parts of the body. The glossy glaze adds beautiful depth to the colors and subtly highlights the modeling of the sculpture. The piece bears the Royal Copenhagen hallmark with a crown and three waves, characteristic of the Danish manufacturer, on its base, along with the model number.
Condition: Very good overall condition. No chips, cracks, or repairs. Some minor handling marks are visible on the base.
