Very nice bust from the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, in porcelain cookie on a blue enameled piedouche representing General Marceau.
Sèvres" mark in a cartouche on the back.
Manufacture marks "S86": 1886 for the paste and "doré à Sèvres 95": 1895 for the gilding.
The famous General François-Séverin Desgraviers dit Marceau, a historic figure of the French Revolution, was born on March 1 in a house on rue du Chapelet in Chartres.
He died in battle in Germany on September 21, 1796, protecting General Jourdan's retreat, and was honored by his Austrian adversaries.
He was admitted to the Panthéon in 1889 to mark the centenary of the French Revolution.
His ashes rest at the Panthéon, the Invalides and Chartres.
"Soldier at thirteen, general at twenty-four, he died at twenty-seven".
