Beautiful late 19th century Satsuma perfume burner with classic decor of the period. The Samurai look amiable, as befits their status as warriors, while the Geisha is decked out in her finest finery.
The dominant colors are brown and gold, but if you pay close attention, you'll find the multicolored palette typical of Satsuma productions: orange, purple, green and a few touches of deep blue. The gilding is very present, and it's worth noting the numerous raised white dots that are also the hallmark of many Japanese productions.
The two side grips and the one on the lid are gilded Fô Dogs, or rather Guardian Lions borrowed from China...
The piece is signed with a reddish-brown square stamp.
The piece is in good condition, with the Chiens de Fô showing slight wear to the gilding, a sign of its frequent use. The latest photos reveal a state-of-the-art restoration of the lid. The close-ups clearly show the staples, which are actually melted into the decoration.
It's a handsome object with a strong presence and decorative power, which works well in a slightly elevated position.
