Biography
edit
Édouard Marcel Sandoz was born on March 21, 1881 in Basel, Switzerland. He is the son of Edouard Sandoz, founder of the chemical and later pharmaceutical company Sandoz (now Novartis).
He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris with Antonin Mercié and Jean-Antoine Injalbert.
Sandoz is best known for his many porcelain boxes, bottles, carafes, tea and coffee sets. He works in a variety of materials, including marble, bronze and ceramics. His style owes much to Art Nouveau. He was particularly interested in animal sculpture, especially fennecs and rabbits, of which he produced numerous representations[ref. needed].
He founded the Société Française des Animaliers in 1933. His commitment to his fellow artists led him to preside over the Taylor Foundation, created by Isidore Justin Séverin Taylor, for almost twenty years. He created the Œuvre des enfants d'artistes and helped found the Cité des arts in Paris.
Sandoz was a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Paris.
