Basket or openwork cup
Hard glazed or bisque porcelain
Dimensions:
Paris, early 19th century
Superb turnip-shaped table basket resting on four claw feet, the frieze base decorated with palmettes and a muzzle in the center. The upper part is openworked in two rows and supported by two finely detailed winged lions. Very nice work of alternation between the matte rendering of the biscuit and the shine of the glaze. Work attributable to the Darte Frères factory, of which we will put a close and signed model on sale soon.
Hard porcelain in Paris at the beginning of the 19th century
Unlike earthenware factories, porcelain factories flourished under the Empire, particularly in Paris. The period 1800-1820 can be considered the golden age of porcelain in Paris. Nineteen factories already existed in Paris in 1800 but only seven of them were founded under the Ancien Régime: Dihl and Guérard, Houzel, Lemaire and Josse, Pouyat and Russinger, Schoelcher, Despréz and Nast.
Unlike the period of the last twenty years of the 18th century, marked by the transition from rocaille to antique simplicity, the first thirty years of the 19th century experienced the opposite, evolving from antique sobriety towards rococo.
