Pair of large lidded porcelain vases with rich polychrome decoration in pink and gold. Our vase bears a signature in Chinese characters in iron red on the underside.
The decoration is typical of the Chinese (famille rose) and East India Company style of the 18th century. This is an excellent copy, a work of the Samson Manufactory dating from the 19th or early 20th century.
The Samson family's "Manufacture of Porcelain, Earthenware, and Terracotta" (four generations) is the finest example, in the field of ceramic arts, of the interest shown in the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries in the styles of the past, from the 18th century to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and in all manner of exoticism, from Spain to Saxony and China. With a very rich, varied, and excellently produced output, the Samsons were masters of imitation and the finest reproducers of antique pieces in the field of ceramic art. The factory was awarded numerous medals at the World's Fairs of the second half of the 19th century, gaining international renown, particularly among museums. While in the 19th century the factory was seen as an excellent producer of perfect copies, the perfection of its current pieces and the renown it acquired make it a sought-after collector's item today, a ceramic equivalent of Sormani.
A beautiful piece, generously proportioned and with a strong decorative effect, very much in the 18th-century style. Excellent condition.
