Beautiful chiseled bronze sculpture of a Medici lion, the sphere beneath its left paw (wear).
Black marble base with a cyma molding (minor chips - dimensions: width 20 x height 2.2 x depth 11.5 cm).
Second half of the 19th century.

The Medici lions are two marble sculptures of lions that were placed on either side of the entrance to the Villa Medici in Rome. Each lion holds a sphere beneath its paw, a reference to the six balls of the Medici coat of arms. Installed since 1600, they were finally moved in 1789 to the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence, although copies are still on display there.
