Patinated bronze bust of a young woman whose dress and hair are decorated with flowers.

The bust rests on a bronze and red marble pedestal.

Artist's signature on the back: A Carrier
Albert- Ernest Carrier-Belleuse was one of the most prolific artists of the 19th century, and enjoyed the greatest success under the Second Empire, benefiting from the personal support of Emperor Napoleon III.
Carrier-Belleuse was admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1840. Noted for his skill by the major bronze-working houses in Paris, such as Barbedienne and Denière, he soon received numerous commissions for decorative objects: candelabras, clocks, fireplace trimmings and more.
Carrier-Belleuse devoted much of his time to sculpture, and contributed to the decoration of important buildings such as the pediment over the main entrance to the Banque de France, the frieze at the Palais de la Bourse in Brussels, and 2 monumental torchères for the grand staircase at the Paris Opera.
Towards the end of his life, Carrier-Belleuse was Director of Works of Art at the Manufacture de Sèvres. His tenure was marked by the renewal of collections and the modernization of style.
