A large bronze group with a brown patina depicting a young bacchante crowned with vine leaves holding a water pitcher, accompanied by a young satyr at the foot of a tree trunk.
The sculpture is signed “A. Carrier” on the base.
Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824–1887) was one of the most famous and prolific French sculptors of the Second Empire.
Initially trained by goldsmiths and engravers, he studied at the “Petite École” (School of Decorative Arts).
During the Second Empire, he earned the personal support of Napoleon III: the ultimate recognition of his career in the decorative arts, he was appointed Director of Artistic Works at the Sèvres Manufactory from 1875 until his death in 1887, during which time he profoundly modernized porcelain production.
Early in his career, he signed his works “A Carrier,” a signature he later replaced, around 1868, with “Carrier-Belleuse,” to avoid being confused with the painter Auguste Carrier
High-quality engraving, with a beautiful rendering of textures (the fur of the animal, details of the grape clusters, and drapery).
Bronze presented in its original patina with slight signs of wear consistent with its age.
