Bronze sculpture depicting the great Greek orator Demosthenes, signed on the base Barbedienne, France, circa 1850.
Very good condition.

This sculpture was made after a work by Peulyeuctus around 280 BC. This statue, originally erected in the Agora of Athens, has disappeared, but Roman copies were reproduced and displayed in various museums, including the Vatican Museums. From 1838, Ferdinand Barbedienne partnered with Achille Collas, inventor of the mechanical reduction process for statues. This process allowed Barbedienne to produce reduced-size versions of antiquities, which can be seen in major museums. This sculpture is a fine example.
