    Raoul LARCHE (1860-1912)
    The Yonne
    Lost-wax bronze casting, green patina.
Signed on the base, foundry mark Susse Frères, Paris.
    Dimensions: 46 × 85 × 37 cm.
This elegant reclining female figure embodies the course of the Yonne, a tributary of the Seine. Lying and leaning on one side, the silhouette unfolds in a supple and natural movement among the reeds, expressing both the serenity and vitality of the water. Raoul Larche, master of the Art Nouveau style, combines here the sensuality of feminine forms and decorative lyricism, in a perfect synthesis between nature and allegory. The model was created for the monumental fountain "Mirror of Water, the Seine and its Tributaries," presented at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1910 and installed in the gardens of the Champs-Élysées, near the Grand Palais. In this ensemble, each tributary of the Seine is personified by a female figure, thus uniting river mythology and Symbolist aesthetics.
