Stone head of a bodhisattva
China
Tang Dynasty (618-907 A.D.)
The bodhisattva's head is characterized by a rounded face, with large lenticular eyes with half-closed eyelids expressing great serenity and framing a long aquiline nose with dilated nostrils. A small mouth with full lips sits above a prognathic chin.
Concentric locks of hair are pulled back into a high, circular bun, encircled by a headband tied at the front of the skull and extending into two three-lobed sections, each evoking a jewel, while the distended lobes of the ears evoke the bodhisattva's sanctity.
In the Mahayana Buddhist tradition, bodhisattvas are spiritual beings who feel compassion for all suffering creatures, and vow not to attain supreme enlightenment as long as there is a single being to save. Playing a central role in 'Great Vehicle' Buddhism, as they are constantly concerned with the salvation of ordinary beings, they are therefore saviors to be invoked directly.
