Japan, 19th century, very attractive and unusual bronze group featuring the Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha in formal attire, wearing his hat decorated with five Amithaba Buddhas and holding his pilgrim's staff in his right hand. He is seated in a position known as "royal repose" on a large kirin, the whole resting on a rounded base. Along with Manjushri, Samantabhadra and Avalokiteshvara, Ksitigarbha is one of the four most venerated bodhisattvas in China and Japan. Height 17 cm Width 11 cm. The scale indicator on the last photograph is a small model of a well-known brand of lighter.
