Copper alloy representation of a Deva with her hands in an arguing position
Nepal / 19th century

The Deva is represented with her legs stretched out on a base decorated with openwork lotus leaves, her bust straight and bare. The left arm is parallel to the body, palm turned towards the earth, the right arm is bent at chest height, palm turned towards the sky, the index finger and thumb of the hands joined in the gesture of argumentation (vitarkamudra). She is dressed in a dothi decorated with floral motifs and girded by a thin cloth falling in flaps between the knees as well as a wide necklace and a long Brahman cord taking place in the middle of a generous chest. The deity is adorned with bracelets on the arms and wrists as well as heavy earrings falling on the shoulders. The face is characterized by long manicured eyes with half-closed eyelids surmounted by superciliary arches meeting at the base of an aquiline nose, the forehead receiving the urna. The elaborate hairstyle is composed of delicate locks gathered in a high ascetic bun held together by a cord.
