Touching terracotta sculpture of the Virgin Mary holding the Infant Jesus in her arms, signed M. One on the base. Created around 1890-1910, this delicate work illustrates the sensibility of religious naturalism at the end of the 19th century, a period when French sculpture was seeking true emotion and gentle gestures. The extremely fine modeling expresses a restrained tenderness: the Virgin's slightly bowed head, her serene gaze, the suppleness of the drapery and the graceful movement of the Child convey a profound humanity. The simple, balanced composition recalls the inspirations of sculptors such as Carpeaux, Chapu and Paul Dubois, whose art combined classical ideals with spiritual emotion. The terracotta, with its light, matte patina, highlights the relief and precision of the features; the surface has a beautiful original patina, with slight traces of age but no noticeable alteration. This piece, imbued with gentleness and contemplation, testifies to masterly sculptural skill and an intimate approach to the sacred subject, in the tradition of the French workshops of the Belle Époque. This work is in excellent condition, with no visible restoration. A private European collection. A fine example of naturalistic religious sculpture, both decorative and spiritual, ideal for a collection or a refined interior.
