History: comes from the artist's family then by descent until today.

Etienne MONtagny is a sculptor from Saint-Etienne. He sculpted several sculptures for the town hall square in Saint-Etienne but also for churches in the region. He also worked on the creation of the sculpted decoration of the Louvre of Napoleon 3 (La Fortune for example).
This is probably a sketch for a (probably unrealized) monument of a monumental Virgin Mary with a chapel at base level. It is amusing to see that 2 of the faces of the base are sculpted with bas-relief scenes: Golgotha with a central opening for the entrance to the chapel and Christ in prayer at the Mount of Olives on the base of the left face .
