Neoclassical grey patinated terracotta bust of Emperor Marcus Aurelius 20th century
Created in the 20th century, this slightly abstract gray patina terracotta bust represents the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, the last of the "five good emperors" of the Roman Empire.
Successor to Hadrian, he was an exemplary military leader despite internal tensions and external threats. He set himself apart from his predecessors by pushing the Germanic tribes out of the conquered territories beyond the Danube. Even if these actions ruined the Roman Empire for his campaigns, putting an end to the "pax romana" after his reign.
The use of terracotta with a gray patina brings a new lease of life to Neoclassicism. Perfect for interior decoration in a bathroom close to plants, or outside in a garden (although it's best to keep it away from wind, water and frost).
