Alfred Ély-Monbet (1879-1915)
Water carrier
Walnut sculpture signed on the base and located in Caurel
Height: 29.5 cm
Width: 10.5cm
After training in his father's cabinetmaking workshop, Alfred Ély-Monbet opened the Atelier de Saint-Guénolé in Caurel (Côtes-d'Armor) in 1906. In 1907, he exhibited his new production of furniture and objects at a congress of the Breton Regionalist Union (URB). From then on he will chair the Fine Arts section of the URB.
Some see Ely-Monbet's production as a counterpart to the School of Nancy, in particular furniture by Louis Majorelle, thus creating a sort of Breton version of Art Nouveau.
Others consider him to be the precursor of the Seiz Breur movement. Jules-Charles Le Bozec, sculptor of the group, was one of Ély-Monbet's pupils.
He died on April 22, 1915, in Boezinge near Ypres, fighting at the head of his battalion.
