Votive sculpture of the monk, disciple and worshipper Moggallana, in lacquered and gilded wood, Burma (Myanmar), Kaunbong period (1752-1885), late 19th century.
These sculptures were commissioned from artisans and placed in temples (or private altars) near the Buddha, to demonstrate their fervor and devotion in order to obtain spiritual merit and thus improve their karma.
The back of the monastic robe, normally trailing slightly on the ground, has long since disappeared, but the rest of the work is in very good condition.
The intensity of the expression and the contemplative posture are particularly accomplished compared to other worshipper sculptures from the same period.
