A marvellous 15th-century South German relief from the Haute Epoque.
This remarkable carved, polychrome and gilded panel depicts a rare scene of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, a precious theme in Christian iconography.
In the center, the bedridden Saint Anne is surrounded by women offering her care and assistance. Below, the Virgin Child is tenderly held by a midwife, a scene imbued with gentleness and refinement.
The figures are finely modeled, and the folds of the drapery bear witness to a mastery typical of late Germanic Gothic sculpture. The decoration retains much of its original polychromy and gilding, with a partially lacunar background that suggests the age of the piece without altering its legibility.
