A work from southern Germany in the early 17th century, probably from an altarpiece.
Carved in the round with a polychrome patina, it is partially gilded.
Saint John the Baptist in the desert is seated on a tree trunk with the Lamb of God on a rock from which emerges a lizard, symbol of the desert.
Our holy man is depicted here as a young man, dressed according to the classical iconography of the precursor of Christ, seated and in a preaching posture.
The polychromy is well preserved, particularly the rich gilding of the cloak. The style is dynamic, typical of Alpine Baroque schools.
Dimensions: 60 cm by 66 cm and 27 cm deep
Good condition despite some occasional losses
