Pair of large Queen's armchairs with medallion backs, in finely carved and molded lacquered wood. Louis XVI period Parisian work of fine quality, 18th century circa 1780.
Unstamped, these large, handsome seats are characterized by perfect lines and curves, meticulous finishing with fine carving and great originality in the carved motifs of garlands and laurel falls, and particularly in that of the openwork escutcheon at the top of the backrest. While we are generally accustomed to finding this motif on 19th-century neo-Louis XVI decor, our chairs are indeed authentic 18th-century works, i.e. original pieces, a source of inspiration for the pastiches that followed, and not copies. Yet it was often the greatest cabinetmakers and joiners who were copied. Finally, the grain of the beech used for the woods is fine and flawless.
All these elements reinforce our opinion that these chairs are the work of a great Parisian chair joiner. It could be Jean Baptiste Lelarge or another artist of equivalent quality.
The set is in very good condition. The silk is well preserved, with no wear or stains. Some minor restorations (traces of woodworm that have been treated), but the structures are sound and without play, with no broken parts repaired.
NB We have 6 identical armchairs for sale in pairs of 4 or 6. Please contact us for details.
