Particularly remarkable piece for this magnificent office armchair with revolving seat from the beginning of the Louis XVI period in molded, carved and gilded wood stamped by the highly prized master cabinetmaker, Sulpice Brizard (1735-1798)
The enveloping backrest is sculpted at the top with a duo of roses, one open the other closed, already revealing Sulpice Brizard's talent as a sculptor.
The belt carved with flowers, foliage and rosettes, rests on tapered, fluted and rudent feet.
Magnificent original gilding, restored by an art gilder.
Excellent quality leather upholstery.
Museum piece Stamped S. BRIZARD, for Sulpice Brizard supplier of the Crown recognized for its finesse, its originality and as Francois de Salverte wrote: "its pleasant fantasy".
Having married Marie-Genevieve Meunier, daughter of Master cabinetmaker Étienne Meunier, Sulpice Brizard was admitted to the master's degree on February 13, 1762 and settled in rue de Cléry.
Most of his work belongs to the Louis XVI style, with models of very fine proportions, finely sculpted and executed with great refinement. We distinguish more original particularities, with for example sofas and bergères provided with a front belt not curved, as usual, but concave.
The Mobilier national, the Palace of Versailles and the Carnavalet Museum, among others, have several works by him in gilded wood dating from this same period.
These works are rare and particularly prized today.
