A large Louis XV period winged sofa attributed to Jean-Baptiste Gourdin. Mid-18th century. This generously proportioned three-seater rests on eight cabriole legs, molded and carved with foliage, surmounted by flowers. The rails and back are undulating, molded and carved with bursting pomegranates and foliate scrolls. The sides are "winged," terminating in whiplash-shaped armrest supports. Note the old reinforcements underneath. The upholstery is traditional. The seat cushion is filled with feathers. The fabric shows stains and snags. Jean-Baptiste Gourdin, master craftsman on March 26, 1748. Eldest son of Jean Gourdin, known as Père Gourdin, he had a workshop on Rue de Cléry. Among his most renowned clients were, quite regularly, the Prince of Soubise, Duke of Rohan, and the Marquis of Bellevaux; but his most illustrious client was undoubtedly the Dauphine Marie Antoinette when she moved to court. His work is characterized by the nobility of proportions, the elegance of lines, and the restraint, qualities championed by his father.
