Set of 6 tubular steel chairs, designed by Mies van der Rohe, model MR10. An early Thonet edition, circa 1960, identifiable by its beige canvas under the seat and its distinctive shape.
The leather has been cleaned and very gradually conditioned to restore its luster and suppleness.
Dimensions: Height between 84 cm and 86 cm x Depth 67 cm x Width 50 cm x Seat Height 41 cm. (Two chairs are very slightly lower than the other four at the backrest, due to normal wear.)
Some normal wear marks (on and under the seats) (see photos).

Acquiring rare pieces such as these 6 MR10 chairs by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for Thonet is a truly exceptional opportunity. The MR10 chair, also known as the S553, was designed in the late 1920s. It belongs to the series of cantilevered chairs that Ludwig Mies van der Rohe developed as he explored the potential of tubular steel. Inspired by the structural principle observed in the work of Mart Stam, Mies gave it a completely new expression: a continuous, controlled line where the steel tube forms a fluid arc, offering both elasticity and visual lightness. The MR10 perfectly illustrates this transformation of a technical innovation into a modern aesthetic statement.
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who trained under Peter Behrens before directing the Bauhaus in 1930, established himself as one of the major figures of modernism. His architecture—exposed metal frames, vast glass walls, and rigorous construction—finds a direct echo in the furniture he designed. The MR series, presented in 1927 at the Weissenhof Estate exhibition in Stuttgart, exemplifies this coherence: materials reduced to their essentials, clean lines, and an elegant presence in the space.

The MR10 combines a bent tubular steel base with a stretched leather seat, ensuring supple comfort thanks to the spring effect characteristic of cantilever chairs. This model, both functional and refined, reflects Mies's desire to create durable furniture with great formal clarity, perfectly suited to modernist interiors.
Even today, the MR10 chair remains a benchmark of 20th-century design: a precise balance between technical innovation, comfort, and timeless aesthetics, emblematic of Mies van der Rohe's work.
