Our foot stool features ornamental fan-fold carvings and a heart-shaped cartouche. These two motifs were particularly used by carpenter Jean-Baptiste Tilliard. These elements, highly representative of this family's work (armchair sold at Sotheby's on November 28, 2016, under lot number 87), are also found on the work of the son, Jean-Baptiste II Tilliard. In particular, we find a bergère stamped by the son, whose decorative carvings are similar to those on our stool, and which also features the same asparagus festoon escaping from the central cartouche (see Pierre Kjellebrg, "le mobilier du XVIIIe siècle", éditions de l'amateur, Paris, 2008, p. 879).
Jean-Baptiste II Tilliard, who became a master in 1764, took over his father's workshops. He left a significant neoclassical output, but also created armchairs in a softened Louis XV style. His clientele included Mesdames, daughters of Louis XV, and he also supplied Gustave III, King of Sweden. The quality of our stool and the motifs we've mentioned lead us to associate it with the work of this famous joiner.
