The story is taken from the Old Testament. During a devastating campaign in the Near East, Holofernes lays siege to the Jewish town of Bethulia. Judith, a young widow, uses her intelligence and beauty to charm the general. She and her maid are invited to a grand banquet. During the night, Judith waits until Holofernes is in no state to defend herself, and then beheads him.
Artistic representations of this scene, such as our tapestry, highlight the danger of women's sensual charm, to which men, like Holofernes, succumb all too easily.
17th century.
