Mantelpiece clock of the EMPIRE period.
In gilt bronze with the effigy of Alexander the Great Student.
The young Alexander holds a stone in his left hand so that if he falls asleep, the stone falls into the shell and the sound wakes him up. This was the advice of Aristotle, his teacher.
Note that he was holding in his other hand a sketchbook on his lap, which is missing on this clock.
Dial surrounding a chased bronze center with palmettes decoration.
The clock has a rectangular base with cast and chased bronze mounts. A central bas-relief, framed by a frieze of laurel leaves, illustrates the education of Alexander by Aristotle, under the supervision of his mother and father, King Philip II of Macedonia.
    Original gilding.
