Louis XV "buffalo" clock, in bronze (brown and gold patina) and lacquered wood. It features two three-light candelabras. Exotic style, from the 18th century.
This clock typifies the Louis XV era's taste for exoticism and Asian lands. Here, the Asian buffalo in bronze with a brown patina sits on a gilt bronze rocaille base with animated contours and lacquered wood decorated with foliage. On its back, the finely chiseled gilt bronze dial is itself surmounted by a Chinese head with a garland of flowers (in polychrome porcelain). It features two three-light candelabras in the shape of water lilies (bronze with a green, brown, and gold patina) in a pot (decorated with lacquered wood plaques with Asian motifs).
This clock is in good condition and is of exceptional quality. The representation of an Asian buffalo in an animal clock is quite rare. The candelabras are also in good condition. The movement will need servicing; we have the pendulum but not the key. The enameled dial has Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes, signed by the clockmaker Chevrault in Paris.
Note: the bezel of the dial glass is slightly warped, a small chip on the glass, small chips on the enamel around the winding holes, small cracks in places on the lacquered wood (see arrows), slight wear to the patina in places; take a close look at the photos.
    * In the 18th century, the Far East fascinated the Western world, particularly in France during the reign of Louis XV, to the point of giving rise to numerous pieces of furniture and decorative ensembles "in the Chinese style."
The Louis XV bronze clocks feature very attractive Chinese figures, sometimes flanking the movement, sometimes enthroned at the top. Similarly, in the same field of exoticism and curiosity for distant countries and their fauna with animal clocks. Their vogue is considerable. They are among the most sought after of the time. Often in bronze with a dark patina, the animal rests on a rock terrace decorated with interlacing and scrolls in chiseled and gilded bronze. The animal supporting the dial can be surmounted by a Chinese character with an umbrella, an Indian, a monkey dressed in Far Eastern fashion or a putto. The most famous are the elephant clock and the rhinoceros clock but one can also find felines, dromedaries or buffaloes. The golden age of animal clocks was limited to the reign of Louis XV, although production continued in a Transitional style until the beginning of the reign of Louis XVI. (See Pierre Kjellberg, Encyclopédie de la pendule française du Moyen Age au XXe siècle, Paris, Les Éditions de l'Amateur, 1997).
