Portico clock in black and white marble and gilt bronze.

On a black marble base decorated with palmettes and ormolu rosettes, two pilasters adorned with Egyptian-headed sheaths support a white marble entablature flanked on either side by patinated bronze sphinxes. A gilded bronze eagle spreads its wings.

The wire-suspension movement chimes the hours and half-hours.

Louis XVI period, last quarter of the 18th century.

The movement has been overhauled by our watchmaker and is in perfect working order.

An innovation in the reign of Louis XVI, the portico clock was a pretext for the most diverse fantasies, both in terms of the materials used and the ornamentation. Our clock reflects this revival of Egyptomania, particularly following the publication of Volney's travelogue, "Voyage en Egypte et en Syrie (1787)".
This craze reached its zenith in the decorative arts with the brief (ten years or so) appearance of the "Retour d'Egypte" style in the early years of the 19th century.
