Spectacular chased, gilded and patinated bronze CARTEL whose dial is supported by an imposing winged victory holding a large palm in each hand.
The goddess of victory rests on a half-sphere extended by lotus leaves and olive branches.

The large, 22 cm-diameter dial, gilded and enamelled with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic for the minutes, is signed by Léonard Roussel, a collaborator of Pierre-Philippe Thomire whose signature is found only on rare and superb clocks, all attributed to Thomire.

This extremely rare cartel design was inspired by a drawing by Charles Percier and Pierre-Leonard Fontaine engraved in Recueil de décorations intérieures, 1802, Plate IV.
This same design gave rise to various creations, including the candelabras referenced in Marie-France Dupuy-Baylet, l'heure, Le Feu, La Lumière Les Bronzes du Mobilier National 1800-1870, Dijon 2010, p. 214.

As with most of the rare cartels of this type produced under the Consulate and Empire, between 1799 and 1815, the wire movements were ill-suited to this type of case. These were replaced under the Restoration, Louis-Philippe and Napoleon III by Paris movements, which were far more reliable and precise.
The one on this superb cartel is the work of Adolphe Mougin (1835-1889), for which he won two gold medals at the Paris Universal Exhibitions in 1878 and 1889.

Perfect working condition, with balance wheel and key.
Movement overhauled by an art watchmaker.

Superb condition, with normal wear to the gilding.

Original chain and high attachment supplied (photos on request).

Empire period.

Attributed to Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843).

Very rare, only one other similar model has ever been sold at the Hôtel Drouot:
