A snuffbox that we don't often see, late 18th century or very early 19th century, round and flat, made of compressed wood burl, tortoiseshell interior, closing with lid. This cover is decorated with a medallion in relief showing the great Tower of La Rochelle, and at its base a shipbuilding site. The subject is interesting, the right bank of the port not visible, the construction site is busy, and the bas relief is clearly legible. The lids of these boxes, very fashionable under the Directory and the Empire, were hot-molded by press on a steel matrix.
    Pretty box, very vintage.
    Dimensions: 8cm x 2cm.
Condition: the lid is superb. The scale border at the bottom shows the scars of an old restoration, see photos.
